CE Graduate Degree Programs
Choose from the following:
- The Department of Civil Engineering of The William States Lee College of Engineering offers Master of Science in Civil Engineering (M.S.C.E.) and Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) degrees. Our graduate program provides opportunities for discipline-specific and multidisciplinary graduate-level education in civil engineering. Advanced coursework and research are used to enhance professional development, improve technical competency, and provide life-long learning experience, and foundation for doctoral studies.
- Entry into the M.S.C.E. program requires a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering. The M.S.E. degree offers a more discipline-specific program of study to students who may not possess a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering. To enter the M.S.E. program, applicants must present evidence of satisfactory undergraduate preparation in engineering sciences, such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, computer applications, biology, and undergraduate discipline-specific courses in civil engineering.
- The Department offers graduate studies in five areas of concentration: environmental and water resources engineering, geoenvironmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and materials, and transportation engineering.
- Admission requirements to the master's program include an earned undergraduate degree in civil engineering or a closely related field; an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale; and satisfactory scores of GRE and/or TOEFL, and any other appropriate credentials as required by the Graduate School.
- Applicants with baccalaureate degrees from fields other than civil engineering who meet the academic admission criteria can be considered for admission to graduate study, provided, those deficiencies in undergraduate preparations as determined by the Department can be satisfied within a reasonable period of time after enrollment.
- Undergraduate students in Civil Engineering with outstanding academic performance may be admitted to the Early Entry Program to pursue graduate study while completing the undergraduate degree requirements. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and must have completed at least 75 hours toward the BSCE degree.
- A minimum of 30 approved graduate credit hours including electives and thesis/research project is required for graduation.
- At least 15 of the required 30 semester hours must be in courses at the 6000-level or above.
- Each student is required to submit a Plan of Study to the Department's Graduate Director by the end of the second semester, or before completing 18 hours of graduate credit.
- Typically two graduate courses outside CEGR can be incorporated into the 30-hour requirement. Inclusion of business and/or communications courses is permitted. However, a student with a non-civil engineering background may substitute the outside-CEGR courses with CEGR courses.
- Only the grades of A, B or C are accepted toward a graduate degree. A grade of U in any graduate course will terminate the student's enrollment, subject to readmission as prescribed in the University Catalog. Similarly, an accumulation of three C grades will result in termination of the student's enrollment, subject to readmission to a program. A student in any graduate program is required to maintain satisfactory progress toward a degree. Continued enrollment is at all times subject to review on the basis of academic record and of actions with regard to observance of University rules and regulations.
- To qualify for a degree, the student must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 based upon all courses acceptable for graduate credit for which he or she received a grade from the University.
- The Department accepts the transfer of up to six hours of courses taken from another institution or UNC Charlotte prior to admission to the master's program in civil engineering.
- Upon completion of a substantial amount of graduate work, and in no case later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student expects to complete all requirements for the degree, the student shall file for Admission to Candidacy.
- Each student should make application for degree prior to candidacy.
- All work offered for the master's degrees must be completed within a six-year period.
- Environmental Engineering: water resources; treatment process and technology; environmental systems and management; and geoenvironmental engineering.
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Structural Engineering: structural analysis and design; and structural materials.
- Transportation Engineering
- Teaching and research assistantships are available on a competitive basis to highly qualified students who are admitted to full standing. A limited number of out-of-state and in-state tuition grants are also competitively awarded. The applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members directly to discuss funding opportunities.
- Students seeking assistantships or tuition grants should apply by February 15. The Department will make the first round of decisions by March 15 for awards of TA's for the following academic year.
